Position Overview

Our focus is simple but meaningful, from our distribution centers to our offices — every employee of C&S and their family of companies works to help feed local families, neighbors, and communities. As our VP of Transportation, you will be accountable for operational results, effectiveness in service, cost, and safety by ensuring resources are prepared and well-balanced across our operations team, dedicated carriers, private fleets, and 3rd party asset-based carriers. Partnership with key constituents to set operational goals, and definite strategies and tactics, to accomplish company goals.

Our transportation team consists of people of ambition and skill who apply a critical mindset and technical capabilities to help drive our business forward, optimizing resources to meet goals. In this role, you’ll also play an integral part in mergers, acquisitions, and other growth initiatives to ensure the C&S Way of operating is leveraged and continually enhanced at all operating sites.

Job Description

Impact You’ll Make

As a VP of Transportation, you’ll Partner with other senior management within operations to develop, resource, and execute multi-year, operational strategic plans. While learning the key aspects of the C&S go-to-market strategy that has made C&S successful for the past 100, you will challenge the status quo by providing options to solve complex problems and enhance the customer experience. Collaborate with all business areas (commercial, finance, information services, warehouse operations, procurement, etc.) to identify and support new business opportunities to add healthy growth to the business.

The scope of responsibility for this role encompasses overall activity on average of 25,000 deliveries to a wide range of customers and delivery types. 1,500 managed inbound loads via both our fleets and 3rd party carrier resources. Overall budget responsibility is north of $600MM per year in expenses and $400MM in delivery fees, backhaul revenue, and fuel surcharges. Understanding a large variety of customer and vendor relationships is critical to owning the P&L results.

You’ll Contribute By

  • Accountability for the execution of all inbound and select outbound transportation activities (store delivery, backhaul/CPU, transfers, storage pullbacks, reverse logistics, etc.), leveraging all available resources in the network. Ensuring utilization of the best possible resources to provide the organization with the highest probability of service and lowest cost.

  • Creating appropriate budget metrics, expenses, and revenue estimates while developing and implementing a detailed process to achieve or beat budgeted key performance metrics, service, and costs.

  • Leading initiatives to improve transportation services in quality, speed to market, reliability, execution to plan, costs to serve, and overall customer service.

  • Effectively collaborating across the supply chain to optimize on-time performance, inventory levels, and costs.

  • Continually improving upon the utilization of standard operating procedures and metrics to achieve business results and to drive all aspects of transportation across the enterprise, including but not limited to: private fleet and dedicated carrier operational standardization and optimization, efficient and obtainable order to delivery logic, high-quality driver training and onboarding, safety and compliance to our drivers and communities, fleet and 3rd party carrier utilization for the nationwide inbound program and excellent customer service.

  • Ensuring each region and facility complies with the C&S way techniques for transportation operations, standardized operating practices, and cost management while adhering to the company's mission, vision, and values statements.

  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with all major customers. Participate in-store visits, customer meetings, transportation summits, and other engagements to understand customer needs and how the Transportation operation can drive value.

We’re Searching for Candidates With

  • Experience with all aspects of complex transportation operations start-ups.

  • Change management experience and communication skills, particularly interpersonal, in complex large organizations. Matrix organization experience preferred.

  • Interpersonal competencies include integrity and trust, adaptability, leadership, ability to motivate, coaching, and mentoring.

  • The ability to effectively collaborate and drive results across a complex large organization.

  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate strategy into an executable plan. Strong problem-solving skills. Strong project management expertise, from ideation to execution and follow-up.

  • Strong team-building skills with the ability to hire, develop, and motivate people to accomplish their best work.

  • Demonstrated experience in building strategic and operational plans that deliver results over multiple cycles. Strong analytic and financial acumen, demonstrated experience in budgeting, and extensive P&L Management experience.

  • Business and intellectual competencies include industry knowledge and understanding, strategic and tactical planning, warehousing and logistics, problem analysis, written and oral communication, people development, visioning, and creativity.

  • Creative with a strategic mindset and the ability to turn concepts into action. Embodies a culture of taking smart risks and innovating to win.

  • Knowledge of transportation policy and law (state and federal) and knowledge of transportation technologies and telematics systems.

Years of Experience

  • 10+ years of progressive responsibility within the distribution or logistics discipline, combined with proven transportation leadership experience.

Education

  • BS in any of the following disciplines: logistics, distribution, engineering, industrial management, and finance.
